Inform us of changes to your commercial passenger vehicle

Selling a CPV

If you sell your commercial passenger vehicle, you must notify us in writing within 14 days to advise you are no longer the owner of the registered vehicle.

Buying a CPV

If you buy a vehicle that is currently registered as a commercial passenger vehicle, the previous owner must cancel their registration with us before you can apply to register the vehicle as a commercial passenger vehicle in your name.

The previous owner must notify us within 14 days of selling the vehicle to cancel their commercial passenger vehicle registration.

Before applying for registration with us, please check the public register to ensure your vehicle is not already registered as a commercial passenger vehicle.

Changing your vehicle

You cannot substitute or change your vehicle during a registration period.

If you have a new vehicle that you want to use as a commercial passenger vehicle, you must make a separate registration application with us.

Changing your number plate

If you own a registered vehicle that only provides booked services and you change your plate number with VicRoads, you must contact us in writing within 14 days of the change to let us know.

You will need to provide the original VIN number to confirm that it is the same vehicle.

Changing the type of service you want to provide

If you want to change the type of services you provide, you must contact us in writing and await further instructions from us.

Changing to unbooked services

If your vehicle is currently providing booked services only and you want to start also providing unbooked services, you will need to comply with additional requirements and registration conditions.

Please visit the following pages for further information.

  • Vehicle registration conditions
  • Commercial passenger vehicle owner responsibilities
  • Acts and regulations

Upon receiving your request, we’ll send you details on the required next steps, including booking your vehicle inspection appointment and receiving a new registration plate to allow you to provide unbooked services.

You must not start providing unbooked services until you comply with these additional requirements.

Changing to booked services only

If your vehicle is currently providing booked and unbooked services and you want to now only provide booked services, there are some requirements that you will no longer need to comply with.

Please visit the following pages for further information.

Upon receiving your request, we will send you details on the required next steps, such as booking your VicRoads ‘Taxi’ de-registration appointment and providing us with your new private plate number.

Changing to wheelchair accessible services

If you currently own a registered commercial passenger vehicle and want to start providing wheelchair accessible services, you need to contact us to request this.

Upon receiving your request, we’ll send you details on the required next steps, which include

  • modifying your vehicle to carry wheelchair/s
  • having these modifications signed off by a Vehicle Assessment Signatory Scheme (VASS) engineer
  • having your vehicle inspected by a licensed vehicle tester (LVT) and
  • presenting to VicRoads to obtain a new registration plate issued by us.

Any person who drives your vehicle must have a valid wheelchair ‘W’ endorsement (link to WAV driver pages) on their current driver accreditation.

You must not start providing wheelchair services until you comply with these additional requirements.
